Open Call: Neurodiversity Art Collab ♾️

Let's work together to visually represent neurodiversity. 🌈 💫

Participate in a collaborative art project to celebrate neurodiversity. 🌈 💫

Follow the tutorial above (or if you prefer written instructions use this one) to create a circular weaving.

Your weaving will represent your neurotype.

Choose textures and colors based on what feels nice to you..

You can use:

  • yarn

  • thread or cord

  • strips of shopping bags

  • strips of old clothing

  • foraged materials (like vines or grasses)

For your loom you can use a paper plate (or circle cut from a cereal box or cardboard), embroidery hoop, or even a hula hoop. Your weaving can be any size you want!

My vision is a massive textile work on a gallery wall!

I need lots more weavings to bring this to life. I’ve eliminated the due date to collect more weavings. If due dates are motivating for you please try to complete this project by the end of the month.

Once I have enough weavings I will put them together and submit for exhibition. If necessary I will find a venue to exhibit the work myself. I’m committed to bringing this project to life and will keep collaborators updated via email.

Where to mail your weaving!

Once you’ve completed your weaving email admin@sarahshotts.com and I’ll share my mailing address.

Note: the Neurokind inbox is currently unmonitored.

Please invite your neurodivergent friends!

You’re welcome to submit a weaving for each member of your family. In the case of mixed neurotype families please include a weaving from each of your kids. I don’t want to leave anyone out and I’d like to include all of your kids to celebrate neurodiversity.

We are not however seeking artworks from neurotypical adults.

What is neurodivergence?

Neurodivergence includes, but is not limited to those who are autistic, ADHD, OCD, syntesthetes, dyspraxic, dyslexic, dyscalculic, etc. It also includes those with sensory processing differences such as hyper sensitivity or hypo sensitivity.

This community respects self identification.

No diagnosis is required to contribute.

Neurokind will endeavor to represent a diverse range of experiences.

This includes, but is not limited to race, gender, sexuality, age, etc.

No hate speech or trolling will be tolerated in this space.

This is an independent, volunteer run publication.

I’m your curator Sarah Shotts. But we may bring on more curators, editors, and collaborators as the project grows. Please let me know if you have a project you’d like to pitch. You can reach me at admin@sarahshotts.com

To avoid burnout I’m taking a pause from curating Neurokind. You can subscribe for monthly zines and updates from my creative compost heap here.

Typographic ornaments are from various sources within the public domain.
